Snow Avalanche hits Kupwara in Kashmir, claims 11 lives

A snow avalanche occurred on Friday evening at 3,000 metre Sadhna Pass of Tangdhar region in Kupwara district. Avalanches and landslides are common occurrences in Kashmir and have caused heavy death tolls over the past years.

Considering the situation, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those killed in the snow avalanche. Further, the government also said a recompense of Rs 12,600 each will be given to two other people who were injured in the accident.

Eleven bodies were recovered after the avalanche hit two vehicles in Kupwara yesterday.

Due to sub-zero temperatures, rescue operations have become very difficult at the hilly pass overlooking zigzag and treacherous roads.

The peaks of Jammu and Kashmir are covered by layers of ice. Amidst the pleasant weather, a mishappening incident took place. As per media reports, 11 people were affected by an Avalanche. A vehicle was hit by an avalanche in North Kashmir.

The incident took places in the Kupwara district on Friday. According to the police, four bodies have been found so far but still, four people are missing. However, three have been rescued by the help of police, army, State Disaster Response Force and Mountain Rescue team.

The mishap took place at Sadhna Top in Tangdhar district at 4 pm on Friday. The people involved in the incident were reportedly on their way from Kupwara to Karnah in a Tata Sumo.

In fact, according to the locals a Border Roads Organisation’s engineer, was also hit by the same avalanche in the same area. He was recovered but could not be recovered as there was no doctor available at the incident site.

As per Skymet Weather, A Western Disturbance is prevailing over North Jammu and Kashmir. In wake of this weather system, heavy rain and snow have been occurring over the higher reaches of the state. Due to several layers of ice and temperatures being several degrees below zero rescue operations are extremely difficult to carry out.

It is expected that light rain and snow may continue to cover, which may act as a hindrance to the further rescue operations. People should be careful before heading towards the hilly regions.
