Australian Open: Weather too hot to handle as player, ball boy faints

January 14, 2014 6:54 PM |

Melbourne weather is proving to be too hot to handle at the moment as the city recorded 42°C as the maximum temperature on Tuesday which led Canada's Frank Dancevic and a ball boy fainting at the court. Dancevic, 29, who collapsed during the second set of his first-round defeat to Paire and needed treatment, questioned the Australian Open organisers' decision to allow play to continue and suggested that it would take a fatality before the players' protests were heard.

According to a report published in BBC, he said, "Having players with so many problems and complaining to the tournament organisers that it's too hot to play, until somebody dies, they will just keep going on with it and putting matches on in this heat,".

In an another heat incident, a ball boy collapsed and needed medical support during Milos Raonic's four-set victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver on court eight.

Former women's world number one Caroline Wozniacki said that the heat melted a plastic water bottle during her straight sets win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

Former Australian Open champion Martina Navratilova tweeted: "No doubt to me that today it is too hot to play."

According to our forecast, the heat wave is likely to continue for another two to three days and temperature will remain in the early forties. On Friday, Melbourne may witness some drop in temperature.
