Srinagar weather is breaking all records this year and making headlines on a daily basis. It’s been just a total of eight days since the onset of Chillai Kalan at Srinagar and already the region is experiencing the worst minimum temperatures since the last 28 years. Dal Lake has already frozen and so are other small water bodies in the area. Now thickness of the ice layer is only increasing over these lakes with every other cold day being experienced in the valley.

The meteorological team at Skymet recently went surveying what’s all happening back at Srinagar. Frisking through the records for the last past years, we have found some very interesting stats. It didn’t come as a surprise that 2018 is one of the coldest years being observed in Srinagar in history.

The below graph is showing the average temperatures observed in Srinagar from the start of Chillai Kalan (i.e. December 21) up till today i.e December 28 (average over the 8-day span).

Looking at the stats we infer that the average for this year’s temperatures in Srinagar is -6.1°C.

Sub-zero temperatures are normal for Srinagar in Winters. Only on some very exceptional cases Srinagar has observed temperatures above the zero-degree mark and only happens in the case of intense clouding over the region, as observed in 2008 when the average was of 0.3°C.

This year however, till now, Srinagar is at the lowest at -7.7°C which is 6 degrees below normal. The coming days are presenting no exception to the already prevailing weather and the same is expected for the next few days at least until the end of December.
