Heatwave in Bhunabeswar

Updated on April 29, 2016 12:15 PM (IST): Thundershowers dip mercury in Bhubaneswar, pleasant evening ahead

Pre-Monsoon thundershowers in Bhubaneswar have brought immense relief from ongoing severe heatwave conditions on Friday afternoon.

Though it was a short spell but the capital city has recorded 2 mm of rain.

In wake of this, the mercury which had already peaked to 42°C by 2:30 pm, dropped drastically to 25°C by 3:30 pm.

This was a much-needed dip in temperature as it paved way for some comfortable weather conditions over the heatwave stricken Bhubaneswar. Moreover, evening is likely to be more pleasant.

However, temperatures will start rising again tomorrow morning on account of clear sky but isolated thundershowers or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. In addition to this, pre-Monsoon activity generally takes place in afternoon as it is generally triggered by heat factor.

Updated on April 29, 2016 12:15 PM (IST): At 45.3°C, Bhubaneswar sizzles under severe heatwave conditions

Severe heatwave conditions have gripped Bhubaneswar once again, with mercury peaking to 45.3°C on Thursday. The day temperature was eight degrees above the season’s average of 37°C.

With this, city has broken its own record of all-time high day temperature for second time in the month. Earlier on April 11, the capital city had recorded 45.8°C against the all-time record of 45°C on April 23, 1985.

According to Skymet Weather, the steep rise in the temperature is due to the continuous flow of hot winds across Telangana and Maharashtra. Though isolated rain and thunderstorm activity has been observed in Odisha during the last 24 hours but it was not sufficient to cool down the temperatures.

Skymet Weather predicts that a trough is moving across Odisha that is likely to bring some rain and thunderstorm over the few pockets of the state. This may give some relief from sweltering hot weather but it will not be a substantial one.

Bhubaneswar was the first city in the country to record above 40°C in February.
