The well marked low pressure area which which was over West Bengal until yesterday has now degraded to a low pressure area and is lying over Jharkhand and adjoining areas.
The system has given torrential rains in some parts of Gangetic West Bengal. Bankura in particular has received very heavy rains to the tune of 354 mm. So much so that the city has broken both the all-time 24 hour record as well as the September rainfall all-time record. The all time record for Bankura in 24 hours stands at 208 mm which was recorded in 1978 of September.
In the month of September this year, Bankura has recorded 633.3 mm of rain against its monthly average of 240.4 mm, which is the more than the double of it. Other parts of West Bengal have also recorded heavy rains including Purulia at 175 mm, and moderate rainfall activity has been witnessed in other parts including Contai 48 mm, and Kolkata 21 mm.
Rains of some intensity are expected to continue over parts of West Bengal wherein showers will be on the heavier side for Jharkhand.
