Ludhiana woke up season’s coldest morning as the minimum temperatures dropped to 3˚C on Monday. However, it is nothing unusual for the city as mercury settles between 1˚C and 3˚C during this time of the month every year.

According to Skymet Weather, Ludhiana observes single digit minimum temperature in January. The only difference is that its temperature fluctuates between low single digit and high single digit depending upon the wind patterns.
These minimum temperatures are hugely controlled by the direction of the winds.
As per weathermen, the northwestern plains have been witnessing dry weather conditions for quite long now. In fact, the city hasn't received any rainfall in the month of January, so far. The last rainy spell was seen on December 13, 2017. Thereafter, weather has gone absolutely dry for the states of Haryana and Punjab including the city of Ludhiana.
As a result of this, cold and dry northwesterly winds are blowing uninterruptedly straight from the snow-clad Himalayas, leading to significant drop in the temperatures during the nights.
However, residents of the city are now likely to get some relief from the chilly weather conditions during the next 24 hours. We are expecting rains to finally make an appearance over Northwest India now. All thanks to the approaching Western Disturbance that would also induce a cyclonic circulation or a trough over Rajasthan.
Ludhiana would also see light rainfall and sky would remain cloudy during this time. This cloud cover would arrest the drop in night temperatures and they may increase by few notches.
