Incessant Monsoon rains accompanied by thunderstorms brought the city of Meerut to a standstill on Friday. Most parts of the city reported extremely heavy rains that created a chaotic situation for the residents.

In fact, incidents of water-logging, roof collapses, power outages and even deaths were reported in some localities. Along with this, roads were jammed and flooded with the torrential showers that forced the city to come to a halt.

Meerut in the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Friday recorded Godzilla rains to the tune of 226 mm in just 24 hours, making it the highest 24 hours rainfall in a decade. The all-time 24 hours high for the city stands at 227 mm, recorded in the year 1909 which is just a millimeter more than yesterday’s fall.

These rains though were a breather for the residents of the city from the heat and sweltry weather but also brought civic woes with inundated roads under knee-deep water.

Prior to this, the city had recorded 88 mm of heavy rains on July 24, followed by 74 mm on Friday. In total, the city has recorded a total of 493.6 mm of rains against its monthly normal of 269 mm of rains which is again the second highest monthly rainfall after 1942 when the city has recorded 696 mm of total rains.

In general, July is the rainiest Monsoon month for Meerut and Monsoon rains start declining in the month of August. The city has been constantly recording rains, especially after July 21.

As per Skymet Weather, the low-pressure area over West Uttar Pradesh along with the Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir is responsible for these rains. However, now the system is likely to weaken and move in a northerly direction. In the wake of this, rains over the city would witness a significant reduction though would continue with reduced intensity for the next 24-48 hours.
