Mumbai has been witnessing unusual cold nights these days, with mercury dipping significantly. On November 10, the city recorded season's coldest morning with minimum temperature settling at 16.4°C.
This was around five degrees below the normal average temperature of 20.9°C. However, temperatures increased soon after the bright sunshine came out.
Moreover, with no change in offing, mercury may dip further inching closer to the all-time lowest minimum temperature of 13.3°C recorded on November 19, 1950.
According to Skymet Weather, nights in Mumbai tend to be warmer than the other parts of Maharashtra due to the city being a coastal station. But since the last few days, cold northeasterly winds are blowing over Mumbai and adjoining areas.
These winds are coming via South Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Madhya Maharashtra where temperatures are settling in the range of 9°C to 12°C. Hence, these cold inland winds are responsible for such fall in minimums.
Further, we do not expect any major change in the weather conditions for the next 3-4 days. Night temperatures will remain considerably below normal. Mumbaikars may feel uncomfortable as they are not use to such weather conditions.
Thereafter, wind pattern is likely to change into warm northwesterlies blowing from the Arabian Sea. This will lead to rise in mercury but the increase will not be a significant and will be just by 1 or 2 degrees.
