At 153 mm, herculean Amritsar rains break records; Monsoon to hit soon

The state of Punjab has been waiting for Southwest Monsoon to make an onset. While almost the entire country has been witnessing Monsoon showers, the Pre-Monsoon phase is not over for Punjab yet.

For the past few days, Amritsar has been reeling under dry and warm weather conditions while also hoping for rains to show up soon. So much so that temperatures have been shooting up and settling above the 35-degree mark.

However, rain gods have finally decided to pour some Godzilla rains over the city of the holy Golden Temple. In fact, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Amritsar recorded a whopping 152.9 mm of rainfall.

These rains happen to be the highest that the city has seen in a few decades during the month of July. The last time torrential rains were witnessed over the city was on July 10, 1881.

These weather conditions can be attributed to the prevailing Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining Himachal Pradesh. Also, a trough is also running in proximity of the region resulting in moisture incursion and cloud development over Amritsar.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet, good rains are expected to continue over Amritsar and adjoining areas during the next 24 hours or so. Not only this, conditions are now favourable for Southwest Monsoon to make an onset over Punjab anytime soon.
