Punjab and Haryana were witnessing a dry spell since many days. Rains had abated from these states and the weather had become warm and humid. As per Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance which was prevailing over the region had moved away which led to the reduction in rainfall activities.

At present, a fresh Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan and due to the outgoing Western Disturbance moderate to heavy rains were observed over Northern regions of Punjab. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, Chandigarh witnessed whooping rain of 121 mm and Amritsar 47 mm. These hefty rains washed away the dry spell.

Pleasant weather conditions are prevailing across the region which has given a sigh of relief to the people.  While Haryana remained almost dry, light rain of 1 mm was recorded in Ambala city. It is anticipated that foothills of Punjab will continue receiving good rains. Weather of southern districts of Punjab and Haryana will remain almost dry but isolated light rains cannot be ruled out.

The axis of Monsoon trough which is currently running through the central parts of the country will move towards North and hence rain intensity is likely to increase over Haryana as well as Punjab from July 30. On and off rains are likely to continue till August 2.

During this period, we expect few moderate spells and one or two heavy spells of rain also which will lead to the clearance of the dry spell over both the states.
