Assam witnesses the worst floods in more than a decade

assam-flood 2There seems no relief from the Assam floods. On Monday, three more people lost their lives due to incessant rains aggravating the flood situation. This took the death toll to 34 in Assam. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) have reported that two people died at Bilasipara and Chapar in Dhubri district, while one lost his life in the Barpeta district.

This year the floods in Assam are believed to be the worst since 2004. The Brahmaputra River along with its tributaries are presently raging across the state. Generally, only the uppper districts of Assam bear the brunt of it but this year the floods have been widespread.

According to media reports, more than 26 lakh people have been affected since April. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have swept away more than 2,800 villages in about 28 of the state's 34 districts. The worst affected places include Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, South Kamrup, Karbi Anglong and Chirang. The districts of Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Barpeta and Goalpara have also been badly hit.

Going by reliable sources, people are also mourning the loss of more than 2 lakh hectares of crop land. The number of deaths has come under control this year due to due to weather warnings issued by the state. However, the damage done to homes and crops cannot be avoided completely.

During last 24 hours, Dhubri received a whopping 100 mm of rainfall. As of now, over 11 lakh people are still in the grip of floods across 21 districts in Assam. More than 1.25 lakh people are taking shelter in about 273 relief camps across the state. The floods waters in Assam have also swept away about 13 iconic rhinos in the Kaziranga National Park.

The Brahmaputra Valley had earlier experienced major floods in the years 1954, 1962, 1966, 1972, 1974, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2004.
