After showing signs of improvement in the past one week, the flood situation in Assam worsened suddenly on Sunday because of heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh.

A population of nearly 72, 000 in five districts of the state are now affected by the flood that includes 28,600 people of three districts had been hit by deluge yesterday.

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Sonitpur and Nagaon districts were today added to the flood hit districts of Dhemaji, and Morigaon. Flash flood submerged Balipara areas in Sonitpur district of Assam.

Following heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh, the water of Kameng entered areas like Rangapara, Balipara, and Chariduar. The road connectivity from Balipara to Bhalukpong in Arunachal Pradesh has also been disrupted.

As per Skymet Weather, these moderate to heavy rains in Northeast India can be attributed to two weather systems. One, a trough that is extending from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to Odisha and another a cyclonic circulation over the adjoining East Bangladesh.

As of now, these moderate with isolated heavy intensity rains are expected to continue over the region for at least another two days over Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Whereas, the remaining parts of Northeast India may witness scattered light showers.

Thereafter, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Gangetic West Bengal which will feed in the moisture from the Bay of Bengal over West Bengal and reduce the moisture incursion from the northeastern states thereby reducing the rains.

Thus, the ‘seven sisters states’ will have to battle with moderate to heavy rains for another 2 days after which situation will improve slightly.
