Assam had received heavy rains which led to over flowing of Brahmaputra River, eventually resulting in floods across Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Life across these states came to a standstill and more 4 lakh people were affected. Around 80 people lost their lives. 128 relief camps had also been set up for rescue operations.

Along with this, animals at the Kaziranga National Park and adjoining sanctuaries were also severely affected by the floods wherein 91 animals lost their lives.

Adhering to these severe conditions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Guwahati on Tuesday and closely reviewed the flood situation. After arriving early in the morning, Prime Minister had called for a flood review meeting with the chief Ministers of the flood affected states, Union Ministers and the Governor of Assam.

The meeting took place at the Assam Administration Staff College, where the Prime Minister reviewed the conditions closely. As per media reports, Modi announced a sum of 2000 crore for the flood affected states of Northeast India. An ex Gracia of 2 lakh each to the families of the dead and 50000 to the severely injured people will be given from the Prime Ministers Relief Fund.

The flood situation is improving gradually as, since the last two to three days, most parts of Assam have been witnessing dry weather conditions. However, now we expect a marginal increase in rainfall activities and scattered light rain with one or two moderate rains will commence over the state. Heavy to very heavy rains are not likely for next few days.

Weather of Guwahati has also remained dry with cloudy sky conditions for the past few days. Now, light rain is expected in Guwahati and nearby areas. However, we do not expect rains to increase in the next 24 to 48 hours.  Temperatures will remain in the mid-30’s and humidity will also be high therefore weather will remain uneasy and sultry. On and off light rain is not expected to give much relief from high temperatures.
