ASI planning to restore Kedarnath temple

July 4, 2013 3:44 PM |

The Archeological Survey of India is planning to rebuild the Kedarnath Temple that has been partially damaged in the calamity that hit Uttarakhand last month. The announcement was made on Tuesday by union culture minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch.

Talking to the press, Katoch said that a seven-member team of experts had gone to Dehradun but due to bad weather the team was unable to go up to Kedarnath to assess the damage caused to the temple and that the team would make another attempt to reach Kedarnath once the weather becomes favourable.

Katoch also said that the ministry will collect the funds from the Centre and state government with possibility of public participation.

The issue of restoring the century’s old temple has taken a political turn after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi offered to rebuild the temple only to be rejected by his Uttarakhand counterpart Vijay Bahuguna.

When asked about Narendra Modi’s offer to rebuild the temple, the minister discarded it by saying that the ASI has the best experts to carry out such work and it should not be given to others.
