As temperature hikes, Delhi-NCR power demand hits all India high

The soaring temperatures have pushed the national capital’s power demand to a perpetual high. Delhi has scaled a record of 6,361 MW power on Monday, the highest ever recorded in any city in India. This obviously portrays that the capital has topped consumption demand by manifold.

The last time the national capital set a record was  in June 2016 when the power demand shot up to 6,261 MW. Discoms have estimated that this year’s peak electricity demand is likely to cross 6,500-6,600 MW. In light of expanding demand, the possibilities of power failures also go up.

Experts say that as the electricity network does not get enough time to cool down in the peak summer season, it leads to breakdowns and outages.

Despite being a holiday and recording a maximum of 47°C, Sunday had a comparatively lower power demand than Monday. Heaps of power cut complaints were received from many areas on Monday like Amar Colony, Seelampur, Uttam Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Chhatarpur, South Extension, Burari and Majnu Ka Tila.

Officials from the power department in the Delhi Government assured that sufficient arrangements had been made to meet the growing demand. They have resolved the problems in more than 400 points by April, and are thoroughly following up with the discoms and innovative solutions.

Delhi is also the power capital of the country. The city's ultimate demand is almost thrice of Kolkata, four times than that of Chennai and 60% higher than Mumbai.
