Chandigarh Water Reservoir in India Monsoon

Monsoon season came to an end yesterday with the last date of September. The data and cumulative figures are all out there ready to be accessed.

One such groundbreaking data has come from Central Water Commission (CWC) that has pointed out that the unusual hike in water storage figures for reservoirs this year.

As has been monitored by Central Water Commission (CWC), this season the water stored in about 113 reservoirs is way better than the average figure for the last 10 years. June-September Monsoon ends with reservoirs holding 21 percent more water than the 10-year average for this stage.

The monitored reservoirs hail from all regions and states in the country including states like Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan.

Breaking down the numbers, the total live storage capacity of these 113 reservoirs is 168.77 billion cubic meters (BCM) and their live storage as of September 26 was 146.2 BCM, or 87% of this capacity.

On the contrary, at this same time, last year the live storage was 127.23 BCM (75%), while the 10-year average for this period is 121.18 (72%).

So, in a nutshell, the live storage available in the 113 reservoirs was 115% of that at the same time last year, and 121% of the average storage over the last 10 years.

In nearly every region, the available storage was higher than last year’s corresponding storage and the 10-year average. The only exception was in the Eastern region comprising where the available storage of 83% was just below last year’s 84% but way ahead of the 75% average of the last 10 years.

In Rajasthan, Odisha, Nagaland, Gujarat, Maharashtra, MP, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, this year’s storage exceeded last year’s, owing to good rain throughout the season.

This figures readily show how bumper rains have showered over the country this year and no doubt Monsoon has ended with a thud.
