After experiencing worst air quality at 463 post Diwali, the overall AQI of Delhi has improved today and is standing at 393. Despite this, a few places continue to struggle under ‘severe’ category, with PM 2.5 and PM 10 being worst at Noida and Chandni Chowk. Most of the other places are in ‘poor to very poor category’.
According to Skymet weather, winds blowing over Delhi and NCR area are most likely to pick up pace by late afternoon or evening hours today. The region would come under the grip of moderate northwesterly winds which would help in improving the pollution levels to some extent.
Despite this, Delhi’s overall AQI will continue to stay under ‘poor to very poor’ category and may worsen even further. It may get recorded around 350 over most of the places in Delhi and NCR area.
Delhi’s overall air quality has been better this year post Diwali celebrations as compared to last year where it had dropped down to alarming levels with more than 600 AQI. In fact, PM 10 at most of the areas was recorded in the range of 700-900.
The credit for the better air quality goes to the continuous blow of moderate winds from the northwest direction on the evening of Diwali. These winds did not allow the air pollutants to settle near earth’s surface and hence the results were better air quality.
As said earlier, a marginal improvement in pollution is likely, however, AQI with more than 300, would continue to harm Delhiites.
