The year 2016 is turning out to be the hottest year globally and a similar trend is seen in India as well. During the first week of April, Delhi witnessed record high temperature. On April 2, Sardarjung recorded 38.9°C as maximum while Palam was sizzling at 41.2°C.

April 3 turned out to be even hotter with Safdarjung recording maximum at 39.4°C and Palam touching 43°C. This is the highest during the month of April in last 10 years.

We have also observed that such high temperatures are generally seen during the second half of the month. However, this year the national capital couldn’t wait longer.

Here’s a look at the maximums in the Safdarjung Observatory of Delhi in the first week during the last 10 years:

Now, let’s take a look at the highest temperatures recorded in the Safdarjung Observatory Delhi in the month of April during the last 10 years.

This heat wave in Delhi can be attributed to absence of pre-Monsoon showers, which were witnessed even in the drought year of 2015. Moreover, on April 3 southeasterly winds from central parts of India raised the temperatures of North India. Temperatures over Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Vidarbha were already above 40°C. This heat of Central India was transferred to northern parts in terms of southeasterly winds.

As of now we can say that there will be gradual decrease in temperatures over Delhi-NCR as the Western Disturbance and induced cyclonic circulation, responsible for change in wind pattern over the region, are moving away.

Winds will once again start blowing from the northwest direction leading to decrease in day temperatures. There is also a mild possibility of isolated thundery activity on April 7, which may give some temporary relief. However, in long term April is going to be above normal. So Delhiites, brace up for a hot month.
