Rain in India

Dry and warm weather conditions prevailed across the country during the last week of March. April too commenced on similar note. In the week from March 29- April 4, the country has recorded 3.7 mm of rain against the average rainfall of 7.7 mm, leading to deficiency of 52%.

As a result, the cumulative countrywide rainfall deficiency stood at 48%. Pre-Monsoon activities remained far and few across the country. While most parts of the country remained almost dry, parts of East India and few areas along the East Coast were the only areas to record rain and thundershowers during the week gone by.

In fact, the rainiest pocket of Northeast India contributed only negligible amount of rains. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat witnessed absolutely dry weather during the same time frame.

In last week, the only sub-division to maintain its excess rains status was Peninsular India, which was surplus by 38%. Northwest India was highly rain deficient with 81%, followed by East and Northeast India by 65% and Central India 5%.

Out of 36 sub-divisions across the country, 5 subdivisions witnessed largely excess rainfall, 4 excess, 2 normal, 6 deficient, 17 largely deficient and 2 reported no rainfall.

Further, we now expect pre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers to pick up pace across the country. East and Northeast India is expected to recorded maximum amount of weather activities.

Northwest and Central India would too see thundershowers, thunderstorm and dust storm in the coming week. According to Skymet Weather, the approaching spell would be prolonged one, covering most parts of the country, barring Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

With this, heatwave conditions will abate on account of drop in maximum temperatures.
