Another Spell Of Rain For Delhi, March To End On Wet Note

March 27, 2023 1:24 PM |

The national capital is likely to witness yet another spell of rain during the fag end of this month.  Pre-monsoon activity with rain and thundershowers are expected over Delhi/NCR between 30th Mar and 01st April.  An outside chance to have hailstorm in small pockets remains a possibility. Spread and activity will be more intense on 31st March.

Base station Safdarjung recorded 12mm rainfall and airport observatory 15mm, in the last spell on 24th March. Both have exceeded their normal monthly rainfall of the month.  Upcoming rains will increase the margin further. Monthly rainfall has exceeded the average of 19.1mm after a gap of 2years. Safdarjung recorded  Nil  rainfall last year and mere 13mm before that in March 2021.  March 2020 had exceeded the normal by registering 37mm of rainfall.

An active western disturbance is approaching Western Himalayas on 29th March. Induced cyclonic circulation will move across the border over West Rajasthan, same day. Combined influence of these will impact the capital city and suburbs between 30th March and 01st Apr 2023.

The dual system is likely to find upper air support in the form of a deep trough, above the height of 8 km altitude.  Such a combination can trigger some hailstorm activity. Delhi remains on the outer limit of the main system but still  within reach of mild hailstorm in some pockets. Rain and thundershowers accompanied with lightning, thunder and strong winds are likely between 30th March and 01st April. Weekend on Friday, 31st March will find  strong weather activity during evening and night. The weather activity will be least on 01st April and ease out the next day over most parts.
