We expect a fresh Western Disturbance to approach the Western Himalayas from May 23. This Western Disturbance will be active and may give widespread rain and thundershowers over Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir as well as Uttarakhand. Upper reaches of these areas may receive scattered snowfall and isolated moderate to heavy snow cannot be ruled out.
Intense Western Disturbances which are still approaching Western Himalayas are unusual. As summer approaches, they start to travel in upper latitudes, leaving the Western Himalayas high and dry. However, this time, both the intensity and the frequency have been high in the month of April and May. In April, there have been five active Western Distutbances. We have already reached the end of May and even now, Western Disturbances are approaching the hills.
This Western Disturbance is expected to affect the hills until May 26th, giving good rain and snow in many areas. After this Western Disturbance, we expect the the weather of Western Himalayas to go dry.
