Punjab and Haryana is likely to be lashed by another spell of rain and thundershowers today and tomorrow. Hailstorms and strong winds may accompany the lightening and thunderstorm, adding fuel to the fire, to cause damage to the Rabi crops. Hailstorm and gusty winds combination is considered deadly for the standing crops. Once lodged, the stem may not straighten out fully, even after the weather improves convincingly.
Western disturbance has approached the Western Himalayas and is moving fast . An induced cyclonic circulation is marked over North Rajasthan and neighbouring Haryana. Another trigger for the hailstorm activity is an upper air system in the higher levels, as cyclonic circulation. Under the combined influence of these systems, rain and thundershowers at most places and hailstorm at some places is likely over Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Border areas and foothills of Punjab and northern parts of Haryana and Chandigarh are at risk of having strong weather activity. Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Ludhiana, Moga, Nakodar, Ambala, Karnal and Chandigarh are expected to face the brunt of powerful stormy conditions during evening and night, today. Remnant activity will spill over tomorrow as well over these parts but with reduced vigour.
