Another heavy spell of rain approaching Telangana including Hyderabad

October 20, 2020 4:38 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The month of October is the last rainy month for Telangana including Hyderabad. Between June and October average monthly rainfall of most parts of Telangana as well as Hyderabad is in three digits. The monthly average rainfall of Hyderabad between November and May is very less. December, January and February remain the driest months with monthly average rainfall in single digit.

October 2020 will be remembered as the rainiest October in the history of Hyderabad. This year, until October 20 Hyderabad has recorded 384.7 mm rain against the monthly average of 103.6 mm. The earlier record was for October 1916 with total rain of 355.1 mm. Highest 24-hour rainfall record of 192mm is also set this year for Hyderabad.

Such heavy downpour for Telangana and Hyderabad is not a common occurrence in the month of October. Hyderabad and many other cities of Telangana are still battling to recover from the deluge of October 13th. Now another heavy spell is expected to approach the state by today and may continue until tomorrow. These rains will be due to an east to west trough running across South Peninsula from East Central Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. But the silver lining is that this rain episode will not be as severe as we have seen on October 13th. We should not lower our guards as few moderate spells accompanied with isolated heavy may deteriorate the situation for Hyderabad. Reason being, the lakes are full to their brim and ground is already saturated.

Skymet is keeping an eye on the situation and will keep updating.
