Andhra Pradesh to get heavy rains due to depression in Bay, cyclone likely

Most of the weather systems which form in Bay of Bengal usually travel in northwest direction and effect the state of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. In fact, recently only, we have seen south coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh such as Nellore and Kavali receiving heavy to very heavy rains on account of a low pressure area in Bay of Bengal.

Now the depression which has formed over south and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal will gradually intensify into a deep-depression. Also, there are fair chances of this weather system to further intensify into a cyclone which will be named as 'Phethai'. This would be the seventh cyclonic storm to develop in Indian seas this year.

In wake of the above mentioned weather system, isolated light rains may commence by the night of December 14 over the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh. Gradually intensity and spread of these rains would increase. Therefore, we expect heavy to very heavy rains over many parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 15.

However, intensity of rains will be more over southern districts as compared to the northern and interior parts of Andhra Pradesh. Sea conditions will also become rough to very rough and wind speed over the coastal area may reach 50 kmph to 60 kmph.

By December 17, this weather system would weaken and start clearing up. Thus, rains will then decrease significantly but still many interior districts of Andhra Pradesh would continue receive scattered rains during that time.
