Andhra Pradesh, Telangana to remain rain deficient despite upcoming rains

December 25, 2018 9:45 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Northeast Monsoon period has turned out to be mostly dry for the state of Telangana and at present the state’s rain deficiency lies at 65%. However, if we look at the records, it has poured occasionally on the region from time to time; all thanks to the harbingers- be it Cyclone Gaja, Phethai, or a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area. But even when approached by these weather systems, the state has managed to elude any heavy rains. Only the city of Hyderabad received heavy rains on December 13 and this was the only heavy rain episode during entire season.

Now, when the season has almost come to an end, there’s one ray of hope in the form of light to very light rains, possible over parts of Telangana around December 27. This rain episode can be attributed to the formation of North-South Trough which will extend from South Chhattisgarh to South Karnataka across Telangana. However, during this time as well we can only expect light to very light rains at a few places which will have minimal effect on the cumulative rain deficiency status of the state.

Talking about Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, then both the regions are largely rain deficient by 61% and 54% respectively. Coastal Andhra Pradesh too had recorded few good spells of rain during above mentioned weather systems, but the rain intensity remained confined over the southern districts alone.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh is set to receive light rains during December 28 and 29. Weather of Rayalaseema however, will remain dry. Reason of these rains will be the formation of trough along the coastal Andhra Pradesh.

But we do not expect any heavy showers during this time as well as the intensity will remain light. Therefore, the post/Northeast Monsoon season will turn out to be deficient for the state instead of the upcoming rain possibilities.
