Normally Southwest Monsoon covers Andhra Pradesh by June 10, but this year it got delayed by three days. And no heavy rain was recorded anywhere in the state for 3 to 4 days after Monsoon onset, except for some places along the coast. Good rain was observed over Andhra Pradesh only between June 17 and June 20.
But thereafter rainfall activity in the state again became subdued. The neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu has also not seen much rain during this period. Though, on and off showers have been observed, the weather largely remains dry and hot.
At present many coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and a few places in Tamil Nadu are registering above normal temperatures by 3-4 degrees. For instance, Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh recorded 38°C as the maximum on Tuesday, which is 5 degrees above normal. Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam also saw the day temperature settle 5 degrees above normal at 39°C and 36.6°C, respectively.
In Tamil Nadu, Chennai was sizzling at 40°C, which is again 5 degrees above the normal average. While Tondi saw the maximum settle at 38°C.
According to Skymet, these temperatures are likely to sustain for next 3-4 days as no significant weather system is expected to develop over Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
However, by July 13 coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of north Telangana will start receiving scattered rain, which will lead to drop in temperatures. The low pressure area which has developed over north Bay of Bengal will move in a westward direction and give rain over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, north Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh. Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu will not receive any relief in terms of rainfall or drop in temperatures.
