Monsoon rains have been lashing the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha lavishly from the last 3-4 days. Though comparatively, the last 24 hours received more rains in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha than the previous two days.

So much so that isolated places over Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours even recorded extremely heavy showers. Within the span of the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Tuni recorded extremely good rains to the tune of 89 mm, Angul 63 mm, Gopalpur 29 mm, Paradip 26 mm, Puri 25 mm, Kalingapatnam 23 mm and Vishakhapatnam witnessed 12 mm of rains.

The reason for these showers over both the state can be well associated with the cyclonic circulation that lies over west central Bay of Bengal off North coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. This system is slightly moving westwards. Moreover, an upper air trough is also seen extending from this system to coastal Karnataka across Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka.

Due to this, moderate rains are expected to occur over many parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and adjoining parts of Telangana during the next 24-36 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rain is expected to reduce over Andhra Pradesh while Odisha will continue to witness rains for another 2-3 days.

As on September 29, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is 14% rainfall surplus while Rayalaseema is 27% rainfall surplus. Odisha, on the other hand, is reeling under a 9% rainfall deficiency.
