Amritsar And Ambala Record Freezing Day, Maximum Temperature Plunge Under Ten Degree

January 16, 2024 4:58 PM |

The Plains of Punjab and Haryana are reeling under torturous weather conditions.  Cold waves sweeping the region have also been blasted by punishing cold day conditions.  Severe cold day conditions have been recorded in many places. The highlight of the region was extremely low day temperatures witnessed by the holy city of Amritsar and the fortress town of Ambala. Both, wrapped in a thick blanket of fog,  plummeted to the season’s lowest day temperature.

Amritsar clocked the mercury at 9.1°C on Monday, a massive 9°C below the normal. The city also remained shrouded under a blanket of very dense fog reducing visibility to zero. This was the lowest maximum temperature for the city this season, with the minimum not very far, at 5.4°C. The diurnal variation, the difference between maximum and minimum, was within 5°C, too low to believe. The city had earlier recorded under 10°C temperature on six days with the lowest being 9.2°C on  07TH Jan. Amritsar along with Jalandhar is considered the coldest place in Punjab.

Ambala recorded its first under 10°C temperature of this season. This, like Amritsar, was also huge 9°C below the normal. The minimum was 3.6°C, about 4°C below the average. The dense fog remained the common feature at both locations. The mercury level, both minimum and maximum has risen marginally today.

Western disturbance over the mountains will not impact significantly parts of Punjab and Haryana.  Dry cold is likely to continue with foggy obscured conditions for the next few days.  Cold wave and cold day may not be abating at least till midweek next. The earliest relief, both in terms of clouds, rain and cessation of fog  & cold wave is likely on or after 24th Jan.
