November 26, 2014 12:43 PM |

Fog in AmritsarModerate fog has been witnessed in several parts of the country in the last few days.  On November 26, Amritsar reported thick fog with the lowest visibility of 350 meters, followed by Gorakhpur at 800 meters.

Similarly on November 25, Agartala reported thick fog with visibility dropping to 300 meters. In Guwahati the visibility was 500 meters, while Amritsar and Allahabad in the northern plains reported visibility of 600 meters and 800 meters, respectively due to fog.

Amritsar has been witnessing thick fog quite frequently this season. On November 22, the visibility in the city was reported to be 200 meters. The fog situation improved marginally on November 23 and the visibility was 300 meters but on November 24  the visibility again dropped to 200 meters.

Gorakhpur and Allahabad have also been witnessing shallow fog for the past four days. Both the cities have reported general visibility of 800 meters.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there are several reasons that lead to fog over a place. Greenery, huge water bodies, vegetation, sub-soil conditions and proximity to foothills are some of the factors which result in fog.

With the commencement of November, fog starts making its presence but it remains city specific. Allahabad and Gorakhpur are some of the permanent pockets, which begin witnessing fog from November till mid-February.

Both the cities have close proximity to huge rivers like Ganga and Rapti, respectively. Also, Gorakhpur lies in the foothills, which makes it an ideal destination for fog throughout the winter season.

November is not the peak season for fog. It is actually with the beginning of thick of winters in mid-December, when we start witnessing dense fog across North India. This phenomena continues till early February.
