The New Year has commenced on a wet note for the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. Rain and snow have been received by the states in the first few days of the month itself.

Yet another active Western Disturbance has arrived over the hills yesterday and started affecting weather already. Although the major activity will only begin over the region tomorrow.

All the major tourist locations including Shimla, Mussoorie, Srinagar, Pahalgam, Dalhousie, Khajiar, Gulmarg, Nainital, Kufri, Narkanda might get to see these rains and snow.  It’s a prolonged weather activity spanning three days and will last until January 9. While Uttarakhand might continue to see some activity until January 10 before the total clearance.

The rain and snow will bring along extreme Cold Day conditions over the region. The gap between minimum and maximums is likely to shrink multifold. It might come down to 2 to 3 degrees in places like Srinagar.

The snow might bring in a cheer among tourists but Skymet extends caution against the upcoming activity. Disruptions to flights, landslides and threat of avalanches will grow multifold.

As a matter of fact, all three hilly states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand have received ample rains in the months of October, November and December. While Jammu and Kashmir is 88% rain surplus, Himachal Pradesh is 33% surplus and Uttarakhand is 89% surplus.
