Rains have once again increased over Kerala in the past 24 hours and as on September 24, Kerala is rain surplus by 13% and almost all the meteorological divisions of Karnataka have received excess rains. These rains were in the wake of a Cyclonic Circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea.
Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka, both are rain surplus by 23% and North Interior Karnataka by 21%. In the past 24 hours in Kerala; Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kannur, Kochi, Kottayam, Kozhikode, and Punalur witnessed 14.3 mm, 61.6 mm, 14.3 mm, 57.8 mm, 13.4 mm, 4.6 mm and 24.2 mm of rains, respectively.
Rainfall in Kerala in the past 24 hours
Moderate to heavy rains also occurred over Interior parts of Karnataka wherein Bengaluru in the past 24 hours recorded 23.6 mm of rainfall. However, Coastal Karnataka witnessed only light rains.
Now, a Cyclonic Circulation has developed over Southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast and another Cyclonic Circulation is over Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Karnataka. A Trough is also extending between these two Cyclonic Circulations. Therefore, today and tomorrow, we expect moderate to heavy rains with one or two very heavy spells to occur over many parts of Kerala and Coastal Karnataka.
While the interior parts of Karnataka will see moderate showers. It is foreseen that by the evening of September 26 showers of rain will start reducing from Kerala, but Coastal Karnataka will receive moderate to heavy rains until the afternoon of September 27. We expect the rain activities to slump over both the states from September 28 onward and then scattered light rains with isolated moderate spells would be a sight. Our expert, Mahesh Palawat has to say that this will be very likely the last heavy spell of the Southwest Monsoon season.
