Air quality in severe category over Delhi, no improvement likely anytime soon

Post Diwali, pollution in Delhi continues to soar. At present, the air quality in Delhi remains in ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category. Today, most of the places in Delhi and NCR are experiencing pollution in ‘severe’ category. Both PM 2.5 and 10 are above 400 micrograms. Today the overall AQI in Delhi stands at 423.

Various reasons can be traced back to this increased pollution. At present, winds over Delhi are calm and very light in nature. Moreover, the winds have been the same during the last 48 hours. Therefore, the pollutants are continuously accumulating over Delhi and NCR without finding a trap. In the absence of strong winds, these pollutants are not able to disperse.

Light winds from West and Northwest direction during daytime are also bringing smoke emerging from stubble burning from Punjab and Haryana. Therefore, local pollutants such as dust particles, smoke from vehicles, as well as smoke from crackers has mixed with morning haze, forming a small layer of smog over the city.

We do not expect much increase in wind speed until November 2. Therefore, pollution level is likely to remain in ‘severe’ category without any major improvement over Delhi and NCR for the next some days. Air quality is likely to remain in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category till then.
