Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Gandhinagar gear up for very heavy Monsoon rains

After witnessing weak Monsoon conditions, rains in Gujarat are all set to pick up pace once again. According to Skymet Weather, several parts of the state are likely to record heavy to extremely heavy rains July 14 onwards.

For the last few days, parts of Gujarat have been recording light rains only. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Ahmedabad recorded 9 mm of rain, Gandhinagar 9 mm, Baroda 6 mm, Bhavnagar 6 mm, Okha 5 mm and Surat 2 mm.

A well-marked low pressure has developed over Northeast Madhya Pradesh. The system will gradually move towards Gujarat and scattered light to moderate rain will commence over the state by tomorrow.

By the time, it reaches Gujarat, the system may intensify into a depression. Hence by July 14, heavy to very heavy rains will appear over many parts of Gujarat. Places such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Baroda and Surat may see some extremely heavy rains on July 14-15.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains are also expected over is Jamnagar, Idar and remaining parts of Gujarat.

Weathermen predict that heavy rains would continue till July 16. Thereafter, intensity will reduce and many places may continue with good rains. Subsequently, rains will reduce further but weather will not go dry. Rains of varying intensity will continue but will be patchy in nature.

While increase in rains is good news for the residents of Gujarat but approaching extremely heavy spell of rains poses a great threat of crop damage.

With these rains in offing, Gujarat which is presently battling rainfall deficiency by 5%, is likely to become rainfall surplus in coming days.
