The entire west coast remains very active in terms of weather activity during Monsoon. This is mainly due to the offshore trough which brings good rains over the region. Coastal Karnataka in particular receives good rainfall activity during the season.
The daily average of coastal Karnataka during Monsoon settles between 35 to 40 mm per day. The region is home to several places which receive heavy rainfall during Monsoon. Places like Mangalore, Karwar, and Agumbe, all record good rainfall figures during the rainy season.
There are several pockets in the country which are popular when it comes to heavy Monsoon activity. Agumbe is one such place located on the west coast in coastal Karnataka. The monthly rainfall average for the rain forest in the month of July stands at a staggering 2600 mm. Also, Agumbe’s monthly normal for June is 1737 mm and that for August is 2172. Thus, Agumbe maintains a four-figure monthly normal for three consecutive months during Monsoon.
With some 10 days to go in the month of July, Agumbe has recorded 1625 mm of rainfall. On a couple of occasions, the village recorded more than 100 mm rain in just 24 hours. In the last two days, Agumbe has recorded more than 400 mm rainfall with more than 200 mm rainfall on both days. The highest 24-hour rainfall figure for the village in the month of July this year stands at 274 mm, recorded on July 20, 2015.
As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the off-shore trough is likely to remain active in the month of July. This will keep most places along the west coast active in terms of rainfall activity. Agumbe is also expected to receive more rain towards the end of July. Thus, the village is likely to inch closer to its monthly normal in coming days.
