Most parts of Uttar Pradesh have been experiencing biting cold temperatures and thick fog, which has thrown normal life completely out of gear. Dense fog in almost entire Uttar Pradesh has caused major flight and train delays. Passengers have been facing much difficulty in travelling during the holiday season as Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Lucknow form a vital part of the North Eastern Railways.
Let's take a look at some of the major cities in Uttar Pradesh observing maximum day temperatures below normal by 8 to 12 degrees.
Weather in Gorakhpur
The North Eastern Railway headquarters, Gorakhpur has been observing a significant drop in day maximums. On December 26, the maximum dropped 8 degrees below normal to settle at 15.4°C. Similarly, on December 27, the maximum settled at 16.9°C, which is 7 degrees below normal. On December 28, the maximum dropped further to record 11.3°C, which is a whopping 12 degrees below normal.
Weather in Varanasi
The holy city of Varanasi has also been experiencing cold day conditions for the last three days along with dense fog. One of the reasons being the location of the city near the Ganges, which provides moist air, adding on to the formation of fog. The maximum temperature recorded in the city on December 26 remained at 22°C. On 27th and 28th December, the temperatures were 15°C and 12.8°C, respectively (8 and 10 degrees below normal).
Weather in Bareilly
The North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Bareilly, has also been observing cold day conditions with maximum dropping 11 degrees below normal. On December 26, the temperature dropped 9 degrees below normal to settle at 12.7°C. The temperature further dropped down to 10.1°C on December 27, which is 11 degrees below the monthly average. One of the reasons is that the city is close to the foothills which adds on to the cold day conditions. However, a rise of about 3 degrees was witnessed on the 28th as the maximum recorded 15°C.
Weather in Lucknow
The state capital, Lucknow also experienced cold day conditions with maximums dropping by almost 12 degrees below normal. On December 26, the maximum settled at 16.5°, 6 degrees below normal. While, 27th and 28th December witnessed colder days with day temperatures recording 15.3°C and 12°C, respectively.
Weather in Kanpur
Kanpur has also been witnessing cold conditions since the last three days. The maximum temperature on December 26 settled at 18.4°C, 6 degrees below the normal average. On December 27 and 28, days were slightly colder with maximums settling at 15°C and 12.4°C, respectively (8 and 11 degrees below normal).
Weather in Moradabad
Moradabad has also been experiencing cold day conditions for the last couple of days with temperatures dropping almost 9 degrees below normal. On December 26 and 27, day time temperatures plummeted to 13.3°C and 14.8°C, respectively (9 and 6 degrees below normal). However, December 28 was comparatively less cold at 17.5°C.
The reason behind the drop in temperatures is the fog which is persisting for longer durations. The minimums will not witness a significant drop as the thick envelope of fog sets early in the evening and stays till late morning causing the night temperatures to rise. But the minimums will still be cold enough to give the people of Uttar Pradesh a flavour of chill. These cold day conditions are expected to prevail in the state for a couple of days more.
