After making landfall in India Friday morning, Cyclone Fani is now headed in the east-northeast direction towards Bangladesh and is likely to hit the coastal country of Bangladesh today. However, by this time, the system would have weakened further due to lack of enough moisture content.
Already, necessary control rooms have been opened in 19 coastal districts of the country.
People living in the coastal areas where Cyclone Fani is going to impact have been asked to remain watchful. A total of 56,000 volunteers have been kept on hold.
The May Day public holiday was suspended for government officials in some coastal districts as a preparatory measure.
At the same time, all the officers and employees of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Ministry of Home Affairs, are present at their respective workplaces.
The storm would later ford through districts of Bangladesh and could affect Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chittagong, and Cox's Bazar areas on Friday.
People have been alerted against venturing into the sea. All fishing boats have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
Flooding has been forecast for low-lying areas of coastal districts of Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands.
