Heavy rain and hailstorm across Delhi NCR on Wednesday turned the national capital region into a winter wonderland. Noida did look nothing less than a hill station as roads and highways were engulfed under a thick blanket of heavy hailstorm. Faridabad was also painted white with some heavy hail activity.
What can be termed as a rare event, it was almost after years that Delhi and adjoining areas saw such heavy hailstorm along with rains. According to Skymet Weather, hailstorm during this time in not new but such widespread intense spell is an exception.
‘Besides an active Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation, there was also a low level convergence zone between humid easterly winds and cold northwesterly winds the formed over Delhi NCR. Not only this, moisture feed from Arabian Sea in form of southwesterly winds was up to a height of 30,000 feet. Prevalence of all these factors together led to this heavy hailstorm activity,’ said Mahesh Palawat, Vice-President-Meteorology, Skymet Weather.
Meanwhile, residents marveled at this unusual activity, which could be seen across all the social media platforms. Picture and videos went viral on the Twitter. While few expressed concerns over this unusual occurrence, there were some hilarious ones also.

These rains and hailstorm activity led to significant drop in the minimum temperatures, which settled at 7°C that was two notches below the average. The maximum temperature was also recorded at 19.1°C degrees, which was four degrees below the normal.
Reportedly, 32 flights, both domestic and international, were diverted out of Delhi due to inclement weather. At least, 16 Delhi-bound trains were running behind the schedule by two to six hours on Thursday.
Now, weather is likely to clear up and rains are not likely to return. With this, minimum temperature would now drop, bringing the chilly nights back.
