Southwest Monsoon displayed its ferocious side over the city of Mumbai during the first half of July. In fact, during the fortnight of July itself, the city crossed its monthly mean of 840 mm. In fact, due to continuous three-digit rains over the city, Mumbai rains even crossed the 1000 mm mark during this time.

These rains had occurred on account of the cyclonic circulation which was persisting over Gujarat region along with the active off shore trough extending along the West Coast.
However, the second half of the month has remained very poor and the last 15 days have seen very little rains. Moreover, the last one week combined has seen less than 5 mm of rains while the last two days were as dry as a bone for the city.
This kind of no rainy weather is not very common but has been the case on a couple of occasions in the last few years. July 2018 is very similar to July 2012 wherein similar conditions were observed. During that year, the last 11 days of July were extremely poor for the city of dreams.
Here is the table that shows the rainfall pattern during second fortnight of July in the last few years:
This year, in the second half of July, only 202 mm of rains have been seen which is similar to that of July 2012where 204 mm rainfall was recorded. During the drought year of 2009, last 15 days of July rains were similar to 2018 and 2012 and only 241 mm rain was seen while the monthly rains were at 1142.2 mm.
Meanwhile, the year 2014 was the wettest with rains being at 1468.5 mm for July.
Now, as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, rains will remain on the backseat and no significant weather is expected over the city of Mumbai.
