This year Chennai has recorded lower than normal temperatures during the first half of May. The easterly sea breeze was prominent during this period and there was light to moderate rain from 11th May to 16th May. This ensured pleasant weather in the city.

According to Tamil calendar, ‘Kathiri Veyyil’, also known as Agni Nakshatram, the period between 4th May to 28th May is the time when weather in Chennai remains the hottest. On 21st May, Chennai recorded its hottest day of the summer as mercury touched 41.1°C, crossing the 40°C mark for the first time in the year.

The temperature has jumped by 9°C within a span of five days after rainfall activity stopped on 16th May as shown in the table below.

The easterly sea breeze which blows in the month of March and April tends to weaken from May, which results in higher temperatures. We do not expect any weather activity over Chennai for at least another week. Therefore, the temperatures will continue to hover over the 40°C mark.
