After seeing a dry wintry season, the hilly states of North India finally saw snow blanketing many popular hilly locales. In fact, this snow show was not only the year’s first, but it had occurred after a long dry spell. The last time the famous hilly stations saw snow was around December 12 in the year 2017.
The recent spell of snow occurred over many hilly cities including Shimla, Manali, Dharamsala, Gulmarg, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Pithoragarh, Nainital and Gulmarg. In fact, the holy pilgrimage of Vaishno Devi also witnessed snow.
The snowfall was attributed to the active Western Disturbance which had affected the Western Himalayan region along with the easterly trough extending from this system. Now, the weather system has cleared away from the region resulting in dry weather conditions over the hilly states once again.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, both the cities of Shimla and Manali which had been blanketed by snowfall will now witness clear weather conditions. So much so that the region will witness a cold day due to bright sunshine. However, due to sunny skies, residents will not feel the chill during the day.
However, due to prevalence of icy cold winds blowing over the region which will drop the minimums even further resulting in very chilly nights. These weather conditions are expected to continue for another two to three days.
Thus, tourists who have booked their tickets after snow painted Shimla and Manali two days ago will be thoroughly disappointed. The weather is expected to remain crystal clear with no snowfall likely over these areas.
Thereafter, around January 29-30, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect the Western Himalayan region. This system is likely to give light rains over the hilly states. However, snow show may make an appearance again over the mid reaches as the disturbance will be feeble in nature.
