Updated on July 9, 2016 7:10 AM (IST): After Satna, heavy Monsoon rains now lash Bhopal
After battering Satna, Monsoon rain belt has now shifted westwards and battered Bhopal and nearby areas. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh has recorded 175 mm of rain. This is the highest rainfall recorded in span of 24 hours during the last 10 years.
Moreover, heavy showers were still being reported over Bhopal around 7 am on Saturday morning.
This is the first spell of heavy Monsoon rains in the month of July, which has so far recorded 86 mm of rain only. With these showers, Bhopal now stands at 177 mm against the monthly average rainfall of 371.6 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, the well-marked low pressure area that has now weakened into a low pressure has moved westwards and is now affecting areas of West Madhya Pradesh. The system is moving at a very slow pace and likely to hover over the region for some more time. Therefore, we expect moderate to heavy Monsoon rains to continue over the city for at least next 24 hours.
In wake this spell of rain, weather over Bhopal has gone extremely pleasant with maximum temperature settling at 27.2°C only which is five degrees below normal. July is one of the rainiest month for the city, wherein it observes on an average 15 rainy days.
Meanwhile, Satna got major relief from the torrential rainfall but some rain activity was still recorded over the city. Satna had recorded over 653 mm of rain in mere three days that had triggered flash floods over the district. However, with rains receding we can expect some relief.
Skymet Weather has already reiterated that this season, Southwest Monsoon is likely to be more active over parts of Central India. At present, Madhya Pradesh is the only region to record heavy showers which makes it the best performing pocket of the country. Not only this, with another system following in quick succession, we expect these rains to continue for next few days as well.
