After poor rains in March and April for Northeast India, May to be goodNortheast India is one of the rainiest pockets in the country during the both Pre-Monsoon as well as the Monsoon seasons. While other parts see dust storm and violent thunderstorm activities during Pre Monsoon period, heavy rains are witnessed over the northeastern region of India.

As far as the average rain amounts during the Pre Monsoon months are concerned, Arunachal Pradesh records 750 mm of rains, Assam and Meghalaya 590 mm, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura combined see 494 mm of rainfall.

During the four month Monsoon period, the Assam and Meghalaya receive the most amount of rains at 1793 mm as Cherrapunji witnesses Godzilla rains during this period which overtakes the rains recorded by Arunachal Pradesh. This is followed by Arunachal Pradesh at 1768 mm, which is further followed by NMMT at 1497 mm.

In terms of rainfall activities, there is a large variability from intra season to inter season. The trend in the past seven years has been such that rains have been more on the deficient side.

There is no linkage that if Pre Monsoon rains have been on the higher side, Monsoon rains are going to be as good. The rains have a skewed distribution and there is no guarantee that deficit Pre Monsoon rains will have negative effect on the Monsoon rains.

The table below shows the trend of Monsoon and Pre-Monsoon rains since the last seven years in terms of deficiency or surplus percentage:

The months of March as well as April remained very poor for the Northeast Indian region. However, the month of May looks quite good and some intense showers are expected over the region during this month before Monsoon marks its arrival over the region.

Thus, the deficiency is not expected to mount up any further, in fact, there may be some reduction in the deficient rains as well.
