Chennai recorded scattered light rains during the later half of June. In fact, there were a few occasions when the city witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall, one on June 19 when 40 mm of rainfall was recorded and the other on June 23 when Chennai received 26 mm of showers.

Thereafter, dry weather continued over the area, with on and off traces of light rains. The month of July was also not very different for the city; however on July 6 the Meenambakkam observatory recorded a whopping 47 mm of rainfall.
During the last 24 hours, the Nungambakkam observatory recorded 7 mm of showers. These rains can be attributed to localized phenomenon.

According to Skymet Weather, light rain may occur during late evening today, but afterward not much activity is anticipated and the weather will remain almost dry. Cloudy sky will persist over the area with increase in temperatures. As a result, humidity will also increase, leading to uneasy conditions.
During Southwest Monsoon, Chennai only get to see moderate to heavy rains when any cyclonic circulation or low pressure area develops over Bay of Bengal, as it lies in a rain shadow area.
The monthly average rainfall for the month of July stands at 103.8 mm.
