Delhi witnessed the hottest day of the season yesterday when the mercury levels at Palam observatory scorched to settle at a whopping 40.6ºC. In fact, the Safdarjung observatory also saw the maximum at 38.6ºC.
The temperatures as per both the observatories were respectively 8 and 7 degrees more than their normal levels paving way for heatwave conditions over Delhi and NCR.
As per the latest records, the daytime high recorded by Delhi’s Palam Observatory at 14:30 hours was 37.2ºC. During the same time frame, Safdarjung observatory also witnessed the temperatures at 35.6ºC.

By this time yesterday, Palam observatory recorded the maximums at 39.2ºC and the day temperatures as per Safdarjung observatory was 38.6ºC. Hence, from the above-recorded temperatures, after baking to an above 40-degree mark, the mercury levels in the 24 hours’ span have dropped significantly by 2 and 3 degrees respectively.
The maximum for the day as recorded by Palam observatory stands at 38.1ºC. Safdarjung observatory also recorded the day temperatures at 36.1ºC.
As per Skymet Weather, the reason for the drop in the temperatures over Delhi and NCR can be attributed to the change in the wind direction. Initially, the winds that were blowing over the region were southwesterly, travelling from Balochistan wherein the temperatures are already peaking are settling above the 42-degree mark.
These hot winds led to a rise in the mercury levels over Delhi and NCR, thereby letting heatwave conditions engulf the city.
However, due to the change in wind profile from southwesterly to northwesterly which are comparatively cooler, the temperatures are likely to witness a further drop by one or two degrees in the coming 2-3 days.
