As predicted by Skymet Weather, last three days saw rains of varying intensity lashing majority of the states. While rains brought cheers to parts of North India, it was a sad affair for the central parts of the country.

Beginning with a better one, hills of North India got to see heavy snowfall after quite long. Right from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to Auli in Uttarakhand saw good amount of rain and snow from February 11-13.

Plains of Punjab too saw some heavy spell of rains and thundershowers accompanied with squally winds. This spell could also be touted as the first heavy spell of the ongoing winter season. Meanwhile, rest of the plains of North Rajasthan, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh too saw light to moderate rains. However, rains escaped Delhi-NCR but weather was cloudy along with cold winds.

Rain belt had also covered parts of East India, wherein parts East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand observed good showers. Interior Odisha and parts of West Bengal witnessed traces of rainfall or very light rainfall.

According to weathermen, these rains were part of the seasonal winter rainfall activity for the northern region, but for Central India, this prolonged spell was unseasonal one.

Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh not only recorded some heavy rains and thundershowers but also saw intense hailstorm and squally winds. Lightning strikes were too reported at few places.

In fact, the spell of hailstorm was quite intense and continued for at least half an hour at a stretch. Parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada have seen hailstorm for the two consecutive days.

This spell has proved fatal for the crops across these states. Maharashtra alone reported loss of 125000 hectares of crop in 1106 villages of 11 states. Buldhana, Amravati and Jalna were the worst affected states. The state is responsible for cultivating Wheat, Chana, Jowar, Onion, Banana and vegetables.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh that is one of largest wheat and chana producing state, reported loss of Rabi crop in 400 villages. Sehore, Harda and Dewas bore the maximum brunt of these untimely rains.

According to meteorologists, although rains were predicted earlier only but considering the temporal and special variation of hailstorm, it gets quite difficult to make an accurate forecast for the same.

Gujarat, West Rajasthan and Konkan & Goa were the only region of the country that did not see any impact of the weather.

Forecast

Moving further, the weather activity in terms of rain and snow would be now confined to hills of north and northeastern region. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Upper Assam and Nagaland are likely to witness some good showers in the next few days.

Meanwhile, plains of Northwest and Central India will remain weather free. Days would be pleasant and nights would comfortable.

Major cities of Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata will witness warm and humid afternoons, while nights would be fairly comfortable. Delhi-NCR, Lucknow  and Bengaluru would see pleasant weather conditions.
