Winter is underway and today Delhi got a glimpse of it. Foggy morning has raised hopes of Delhiites and Delhi weather is likely to keep up with the expectations. Due to the cloudy weather, day temperature has taken a dip in parts of the national capital region and Punjab and will follow suit for next two to three days.
Delhi is yet to begin its chilly affair this season. However, light rain is likely in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab in next 24-48 hours that will result in a marginal drop in maximum and minimum temperature.
As a fresh Western Disturbance begins to affect weather in the hills of North India today and enable smooth flow of northerly winds over Northwest India, a significant drop in day and night temperature is expected over a period of next few days.
Winter lovers can also expect dense fog in Delhi, Amritsar and few areas of Uttar Pradesh. Thick blanket of fog enveloped Amritsar with the visibility dropping to nil today. Delhi-NCR also observed moderate fog with the visibility being recorded at 250 metres.
The New Year has undoubtedly started with uncharacteristically warm weather in plains of North India where Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh and parts of Rajasthan witnessed above normal temperatures. Delhi has recorded its highest minimum temperature of the season while maximum temperature is also nudging for an equally unwanted space. However, for winter lovers, things are likely to change as January is soon expected to observe colder days with foggy day conditions in the coming days.
Maximum temperature that settled at 26.5°C in Delhi on Tuesday, the highest day temperature recorded in January since 2008, has also witnessed a drop and settled at 24.6°C on Wednesday.
Residents of North India have been reeling under warm weather conditions for quite some time. The mild winter also weakened the demand of woolens during this time of the year, pushing sales to be around 15% below than the expected level.
Delhi has been witnessing the warmest first six days in January in last few years. Though with fresh Western Disturbance approaching Jammu and Kashmir and possible positive effect on weather in the plains of North India, situation is expected to improve.
