After a poor start, Northeast Monsoon to revive in Tamil Nadu by Nov 27, expect some heavy showers

After a decent start in October, the pace of Northeast Monsoon slowed down in the month of November. So much so that the first half of the month was nearly dry for Tamil Nadu. However, rainfall activities picked up pace from November 18 and have been satisfactory since then. Some areas have even managed to record heavy showers in the last couple of days.

For instance, Karaikal had recorded heavy rain to the tune of 95 mm on November 24, while Pamban has received 75 mm of rain during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday. Parangipittai too was lucky to record more than 150 mm of rain in a span of just seven days.

Due to good amounts of rainfall in October, the state was standing rain surplus at 27% by the end of the month (rainfall data from Oct 1 to 31). However, due to the poor start in November, this surplus was completely consumed and the state incurred a rain deficit of 9% as of November 17, (rainfall data from Oct 1 to November 17) which happens to be the lowest so far (though in normal category).

However, the revival of Monsoon from November 18 improved this situation to some extent and arrested the further increase of rain deficiency. Since then, until now, the rain deficiency of the state has been intact at 9% and has not risen any further.

In the last 24 hours, rains have remained mainly confined to South-Coastal Tamil Nadu, wherein some moderate to heavy showers have been recorded. The intensity, however, was light for the interior parts and the capital city of Chennai too saw light showers only.

During the next two days as well, the intensity would remain light only, particularly for the coastal areas including the capital city of Chennai. However, this scenario is expected to change November 27 onward, when Northeast Monsoon would revive and bring in some good showers for the state.

Rains are likely to commence from the coastal stations and would gradually cover interior parts as well. On November 28 and 29, we can expect moderate showers, while there are chances of heavy rain in Karaikal, Nagapattinam, and Pamban on November 30 as well. These rains could spillover to the first two days of December as well, but in any case, the state would not be able to get rid of the deficiency completely.
