The entire West Coast of India has been observing heavy rain after the onset of Monsoon in the region. Konkan & Goa, and Mumbai have been the most active pockets of the area. An off shore trough has been active along the West Coast giving very heavy rain in places including Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Goa and others.
In addition to the off shore trough, there is also a cyclonic circulation in the northern Arabian Sea adjoining Gujarat. This system has been active throughout the West Coast since the last three days. Mumbai has been observing very heavy rain since yesterday.
Incessant and continuous rain has been observed in the West Coast for the past week. Although, the intensity of rain has been varying, but almost all parts along the Western Ghats have been witnessing rainfall activity.
From 8:30 am on Thursday, Mumbai received 283 mm of rain which is the highest for a span of 24 hours in last ten years in the month of June. Ratnagiri has recorded 135 mm of rain. Goa has recorded 102 mm of rain, Karwar (89.4 mm), Honavar (61.8 mm), Kochi (46 mm), and Mangalore (44.8 mm).
Heavy rain has been making life difficult for people living in these areas. High tide is accentuating which further pushes the sea water inland making conditions even worse. Most places in Mumbai have been waterlogged, schools are closed and rain has disrupted the daily lives of people.
This system in the Arabian Sea will remain active for the next few days and will also give good amounts of rain in most parts of South Gujarat .
