Active monsoon conditions across the region and vigorous in some pockets, over South Peninsula were the highlights for the 2nd consecutive day. As expected, heavy rains lashed Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Palakkad and Alapuzha. Nungambakkam, record observatory for Chennai, received moderate to heavy showers for the 3rd consecutive day. The city has nearly achieved its normal rainfall for the month, with some bonus lined up in the remaining days. Tirupathi, Chennai, Parangipettai, Kanyakumari, Paramathy, Cochin and Punalur received moderate showers through the day and night. State capital of Kerala, received the first three digit rainfall of 24hr and recorded whopping 149mm, ending 8.30 a.m today morning.
Courtesy, the easterly wave coupled with cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area, activated northeast monsoon. However, both these features are likely to vacate the respective areas and the pulse of rains will slow down, over the next 48 hours or so. Interiors of Tamil Nadu and state of Kerala will observe fairly wide spread rain and thundershowers today, reducing marginally in intensity, tomorrow. This wet spell may even reach Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema. While, the activity may slow down over the weekend, cities like Chennai, Ongole, Nellore and Kavali may continue with moderate showers.
The northeast monsoon activity is likely to mellow down and possibly take a ‘break’ between 28th and 30th November. The likely storm coming up in the Bay of Bengal may break the flow of northeasterly stream, while tracking across south-central and northwest Bay of Bengal. This may be followed by yet another system, extending the ‘break conditions’ well in to first week of December.
