Active Monsoon conditions triggered heavy rains in Pune on Thursday, as city recorded 71 mm of rains in mere nine hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. With this the city has surpassed its monthly average rainfall for June that stands at 116.1 mm.
Till June 26, Pune had recorded only 60.7 mm. But the heavy spell today afternoon helped Pune to achieve its monthly target.
Rains did take a break thereafter but intense clouding has been persisting. According to weathermen, more heavy rains are likely to return soon as a patch of intense convective clouds are hovering over Pune. We can expect moderate to heavy rains to continue in Pune for another 24 hours. Thereafter, intensity of rains would decrease but isolated showers cannot be ruled out.
Weather has been extremely pleasant throughout the day, and we can expect similar weather to prevail for Friday as well.
These Monsoon showers can be attributed to the off-shore trough running along the West Coast and a cyclonic circulation persisting over east-central Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra Coast.
Pune has been recording on and off light rains for the last one week or so, but heavy rains had remained in hiding. Today's spell cam also be marked as the first heavy Monsoon spell for Pune, this season.
Being a rain shadow area, Pune does not record much rains during the Southwest Monsoon season. Until and unless any system does not travel from the close vicinity, the city does not receive much rains.
